What are the various components of a rooftop solar system?

Solar Panels work on the phenomenon called the Photovoltaic Effect to produce electricity. Solar Panels are nothing but blocks of specially designed semiconducting material, which produce a small amount of electricity when light falls on them. This small amount of electricity is produced in a large number of solar panels (Solar Arrays) to produce electricity for everyday consumption.
With the help of Inverter the DC electricity generated by the solar panels are converted to the alternating current (AC).
The mounting structure, or racking system, is the support structure that holds the PV panels. PV modules are generally mounted on support structures in order to more efficiently capture solar insolation, increase generation, and have a stable structural support. Mounting structures can be either fixed or tracking.
Balance of system (BoS) consist of cables, ACDB & DCDB, switchgears, junction boxes, meters, Lightning Arrester/earthing etc.
The Net Meter is a bi directional meter which records the export of units from Solar PV and also units imported from the state board/utility company.
Net Metering System
Net metering system is a billing mechanism which calculates the total units exported to the grid with total units imported from the grid. For example, if a residential customer has a PV system on his home's rooftop, it may generate more electricity than the home uses during daylight hours. If the net units are in ‘+ve’ then those units are carried forward to the next month and if the net units are in ‘-ve’ then Discom will send you the bill, as it is the excess units consumed. The adjacent image describes the process flow of the Net Metering system:
As an example:
- Say you import 500 units and export 400 units – you monthly bill will be for 100 units
- Say you import 400 units and export 500 units – you will be credited for 100 units, which will be carried over to the following month
The advantage of net metering is that you don’t need a battery to store energy as any excess solar power is exported back to the electricity utility for a later consumption.
